Allergy-Proofing a Garden

The garden has become a source of allergens, and this is a common problem among homeowners. Whether they themselves are allergic or other residents of the household, having allergies can sometimes be a hassle, and can prevent people from fully enjoying their homes.

However, there is a way to allergy-proof the garden. All it takes is a bit of research and the right choice of plants. For example, there are plants that don’t depend on the wind to pollinate. While this may be disheartening, since the list excludes a huge amount of trees, flowers, shrubs, and grasses, many equally beautiful plants are non-flowering and rely on insects for pollination.

If a person’s heart is set on having flowers though, then a bit of landscaping might be in order. Flowers need to be placed as far away as possible from doors to the house, or windows near the bedrooms. The same goes for other wind-pollinated plants.

Oyster-shell and other inorganic mulches are also better choices for allergy-proofing a garden compared to wood-chips, as the latter is known to bring about dust, and the subsequent hay fever and asthma attack.

Finally, homeowners should maintain their gardens at all times. Grass should be mowed and weeds should be removed. It’s very important that the person of the household who does this is the person without allergies. However, if everyone in the home has allergies, then it may be best to call a professional for garden maintenance.
